Deity is here! [Jun. 21st, 2006|02:36 pm]
[mood | refreshed]

I am proud to announce that we received Deity by Vic Mudd in the Afterbirth office!  We are so pleased to be offering Vic's first book.  It's a great read, perfect for summer when you want something lighter and totally bizarre.  I especially enjoy the part where God visits the jellyfish...and they have a few choice words for him.  The "regular" earth family he joins are also a total hoot.  It's available here or at the usual places (amazon, shocklines, etc).  Since Vic is a Pacific Northwesterner, he did stop by the office and sign a few copies, so first come, first served!

Happy summer solstice to all!

Bizarro Party Friday Night at World Horror! [May. 8th, 2006|09:46 pm]
[mood | giddy]

Anyone in the San Francisco area, stop by the World Horror party suites this Friday night for the big Bizarro party!  Carlton and Rose from Eraserhead have made 3 kinds of Bizarro beer (one with an Afterbirth label!), and I just put in a huge order for various other beer, wine, and such.  We'll also have some extremely long sub sandwiches to share around, compliments of Jeremy Robert Johnson.  You can meet authors like Jeremy, Carlton Mellick III, Gina Ranalli, Kevin Donihe, and perhaps Nicole Del Sesto and Vic Mudd.  And, of course, a few of us editor-types.  It'll be a blast!

Also, want to remind everyone to check out the latest issue of Bust Down the Door and Eat All the Chickens, edited by Bradley Sands.  You'll find info on issue #4 at http://www.absurdistjournal.com/current.htm  Afterbirth authors contributing are Vincent Sakowski, Ray Fracalossy, Jason Earls, and John Edward Lawson.

The Bizarro Starter Kit will also be released at World Horror, and includes Afterbirth authors Carlton Mellick III (well, we only borrowed him briefly), John Edward Lawson (ditto from Raw Dog Screaming Press), Gina Ranalli,, Bruce Taylor, and Vincent Sakowski.  For $10 you get 10 authors bringing you novellas or short stories.  The kit is put out by Bizarro Books, a cooperative venture of Afterbirth, Eraserhead, and Raw Dog Screaming Press.

The Afterbirth authors are out there in the world, so beware!

The Eyeball knows all!

Chemical Gardens and World Horror [May. 5th, 2006|02:46 pm]
[mood | busy]

We've received shipment of Chemical Gardens by Gina Ranalli and it is amazing...every time I read a page or two I get sucked into the totally bizarre story...and the cover by Gus Fink is definitely a reflection of the book.  For those who don't know Gus, he is an outsider artist that we've been following for years.  You should check out his other work at gusfink.com or over on ebay.  He also has a comic out that you can find on Amazon, The Trouble with Igor with Chris Reilly.

You'll be able to see a novella by Gina in the Bizarro Starter Kit, just releasing at World Horror as a collaboration of Afterbirth, Eraserhead, and Raw Dog Screaming Press.  Her novella will also be released separately later this year---it's called Suicide Girls in the Afterlife so watch for it.  Gina & Gus Fink have their own collaboration, 13 Thorns, which will go to press this year as well!  A prolific duo to be sure.

I'll have to catch you up on the doings of the Afterbirth authors a little later, because this week I'm busy getting ready for WORLD HORROR!!! We leave next week on May 11, and will be exhibiting there until May 14!  We'll be in the dealer's room in the Bizarro section with Eraserhead's Carlton Mellick III and Rose O'Keefe, as well as author Jeremy Robert Johnson.  A couple of our authors will be stopping by--Nicole Del Sesto, a California writer whose work we'll publish this fall (All Encompassing Trip) and maybe even Vic Mudd, whose book Deity (The Almighty's Adventures on Earth and Beyond) will release very soon.  And of course Gina will be there, and will be signing her new book Chemical Gardens.  There are apparently some bonus gifts for those who buy books from us at the convention--an eyeball theme, and that's all I'm going to say!

Unfortunately, I need to let everyone know that I haven't read a single submission in at least a month.  :-(  so please be patient if you've sent something.  I hope my life goes back to relative normality after WHC!  Remember that the eyeball rules, as does the Autumn Eggplant of the Underground Zero!

Book number 6 [Apr. 21st, 2006|07:44 pm]
[mood | chipper]

Chemical Gardens is off to press!  We will get to see the final proof soon, and if all is well, should get shipment of it in a few weeks.  It is such a fun, absurd, and, well, bizarre book!  I can't wait for everyone to see it.  Gina Ranalli has a novella and a book of short stories in the hopper also.  Speaking of the hopper, lots bouncing around in there!  Vic Mudd's book Deity is getting really close to going to the printer.  And we're almost ready for final editing of Tales from the Vinegar Wasteland by Ray Fracalossy.  If you could peek into that previously-mentioned hopper, you would see four or five other books in there, certainly enough to keep us busy into 2007!

Of course, our published authors are not sitting on their heels.  Several have material that will appear in a brand new collection of bizarro fiction, The Bizarro Starter Kit.  Others have been doing radio interviews and speaking around their local areas.  We're getting prepared for the World Horror Convention in San Francisco, May 11-14.  Some goofy promo stuff just arrived in the mail.  It's a secret though...you'll have to come to WHC and visit our booth to find out!

From the spring allergies section of the Afterbirth office, this is your editor, signing off with a sneeze.

Afterbirth Authors in The Dream People [Apr. 1st, 2006|10:42 pm]
[mood | impressed]

Check out Issue 25 of The Dream People (www.dreampeople.org) for a story by Bradley Sands:  "Abridged Version."   Also take a look at the great review of Kevin Dole 2's Tangerinephant by Kristina Marie Darling.  Darling states, "Tangerinephant, is a hilarious, imaginative, and at times heartbreaking book...Dole 2 uses Tangerinephant's abduction by the Chill as an opportunity to parody American culture." After discussing some of the experimental techniques used in the book she concludes "Tangerinephant is a daring, original work thematically and in terms of its storytelling. I highly recommend it for an enjoyable experimental summer read."  Speaking of reading, there is a lot of other great material to read in The Dream People, too!  Enjoy!

Afterbirth authors are out and about [Mar. 19th, 2006|12:58 pm]
[mood | impressed]

A Michigan radio station (WIDR 89.1 FM) will be interviewing three of our Afterbirth authors in the month of April. Ron Riekki and co-host Kenny Witzgall, on their program Promethean Underground Literary Show, will discuss the books, the authors, the bizarro movement, and anything else that comes to mind, as well as giving opportunity for listeners to call in with questions or comments. On Wednesday, April 5 at 5:30 PM, they will interview John Lawson; then Bruce Taylor on the 12th. On April 19, they will be discussing Bradley's debut novel, IT CAME FROM BELOW THE BELT.  Tune in!

Back by popular demand, Bruce Taylor returns to Epilogue Books in Seattle, to read more magic realism and surrealism from his new book, KAFKA'S UNCLE AND OTHER STRANGE TALES as well as from another work, THE FINAL TRICK OF FUNNYMAN AND OTHER STORIES. He will also be reading from a work in progress, KAFKA'S UNCLE, THE GHASTLY PREQUEL AND OTHER STORIES OF LOVE AND PATHOS FROM THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL, THIRD-WORLD BANANA REPUBLIC. The event is scheduled for April 6 at 6:30.

In other news, Kevin Dole 2 spoke at Eastern Michigan University recently, discussing Tangerinephant and the underground press. The talk was titled "Technology and the Future of Independent Publishing." He talked about how he came to be published with Afterbirth and some of the new web-based marketing approaches.

Afterbirth Books is also proud to welcome Jason Earls, and his book THE COCOON OF TERROR, to the group.  Jason's book will be scheduled for release in early 2007.  Jason is an author and mathmetician, and this book contains a ground-breaking combination of bizarro material and math that will blow you away!  Watch for more details.

We're excited with our spring offerings, that we hope to present in the next couple of months:  CHEMICAL GARDENS, DEITY, and VINEGAR WASTELAND.  Early reviews are very positive so get ready!

Thanks for checking in with us, and remember the Autumn Eggplant of the Underground Zero always has something for everyone.  ;-)

Our fifth book arrives in the office! [Mar. 13th, 2006|11:24 pm]
[mood | pleased]

Just a quick note to let everyone know that It Came from Below the Belt is in!  The boxes were delivered by the very nice UPS woman, under clear blue Seattle skies.  We'll begin shipping out preorders this week.  Congrats to Bradley on the publication of his first novel!

autumn eggplant of the underground zero [Mar. 5th, 2006|10:58 am]
[mood | excited]
[music |Eyeball Skeleton!]

Greetings all you bizarro lovers from the underground! Good news--It Came from Below the Belt by Bradley Sands went off to the printer, and is on-route in its finished state to our office as we speak! Very soon you will be able to order SIGNED COPIES over at shocklines.com! So get in line for yours, they're gonna go fast. Shocklines is also setting up our own Bizarro section, for you to be able to quickly find titles from us, from Eraserhead Press, from Raw Dog Screaming Press, and other bizarro books you might like to dig into. Yeah for Matt! We totally support indie retailers like Shocklines that are getting the word out to you all. Of course, you can always order titles from us here--we'll even send you weird stuff with your books, 'cause that's just how we are. So many ways to get underground books...genremall.com...projectpulp.com...even Amazon if you like that. If you do go over there, be sure to post a review on your fav books, to get others interested in what you know is happening stuff, way better than that book-club-sappy-title-of-the-month or repetitively-written-regurgitated-for-the-masses junk. Bizarro books from the autumn eggplant of the underground zero rule!

(no subject) [Feb. 11th, 2006|01:36 pm]
[mood | energetic]
[music |anything from Mighty Mohawk Man]

Welcome to Afterbirth news!  And a lot of news there is...  Here's what's been going on:

  • It Came from Below the Belt by Bradley Sands is just about ready to go to the printer!  Hooray! And isn't that cover art cool?  Reminds me of those old-time movie posters.
  • We've just posted new cover art for Deity and Chemical Gardens (our new name for The Hanging Gardens of Babylon--what do you think? Reflects more of the edgy-punk-band nature of the book we think).
  • Upcoming releases include Not Quite One of the Boys, The Vinegar Wasteland, and a collaboration between Gina Ranalli and Gus Fink.  Gus is an artist whose work we've followed for a while, who has done comic books and mixed-media paintings up to this point.  (You can find more of his stuff on his website, www.gusfink.com)  We'll have more info on all these titles up soon on our catalog page.
  • Bruce Taylor continues to have appearances and book signings.  One was just held at the Madison Market in Seattle on Feb. 8.  There's another one next week--Feb. 16 at Epilogue Books (2005 NW Market Street in the Ballard area of Seattle).  Hope you locals can stop by--starts at 6:30!
  • Both John Lawson and Carlton Mellick III have new stuff out, at Raw Dog Screaming Press and Eraserhead Press respectively.  Go check it out!  (Find the links on our links page.)
  • Tangerinephant is doing well...and go over to wikipedia.org to see an update on the entry for the word "bizarro fiction" that Kevin Dole 2 worked on.
  • We just signed two new authors!  The first, Christian Tebordo comes to us with Better Ways of Being Dead.  Christian lives in Philly, and has a previous book out, The Convicted and Subsequent Life of Savior Neck.  He also says he plays bass guitar in a group called "The Failed Alliance."  We continue with the author/musician combos!
  • The second author is a newcomer, Nicole Del Sesto.  Her book, All Encompassing Trip is quite a trip!  She tells us she's a "veteran of the travel industry" and so has travelled all over the world.  She won't want me to tell you this--but her first attempt at a novel was in 7th grade:  a hamster love story.  (Maybe we'll have to snag it to publish some day!)
  • Speaking of new material--we love getting all the submissions!  But...we're looking to be full up for what we can do in 2006.  Not to discourage you from sending things in, because it's great to get the schedule set for the future, but just be aware that it'll likely be 2007 before we can put something else into print.

Wow, you can see we're really rockin' and rollin' over here at the Afterbirth office.  Thanks for stopping by.  I sign off from a beautiful day in Seattle, where it is possible that most of the grass may be dried out at last from our non-stop month or two of rain (I think we beat our record around here).  Not to say that I don't love to squelch around in soggy shoes, but it does make for cold toes...  Anyway, remember that bizarro underground weirdness rules and can change your life forever!

Afterbirth News [Dec. 12th, 2005|09:08 pm]
[mood | sick]

Hey, everyone, this is Karen, and I've decided to take over this little news column...the "Mighty G-ster" (as she insists on being called) has been writing to you all, but unfortunately her brain parasites have worsened...but, no worries!  I hear brain parasites can actually be good for the creative energy in the long term.  :-)

Lots has happened this fall for Afterbirth.  John Lawson's Pocket Full of Loose Razorblades released in August, and has been doing nicely since then.  (John and Jennifer also birthed a baby in addition to a book, what a combo!)  After numerous computer nightmares, we were finally able to get Kafka's Uncle and Other Strange Tales by Bruce Taylor out just in time for OryCon, Oregon's Science Fiction Convention, in Portland in November.  Bruce spoke on several panels, and we had a book release party in the hotel, with special guests Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson (authors of the ongoing books in the Dune series, among other things).  Brian and Kevin had been so kind as to contribute blurbs for the back cover, and since they were guests of honor at the convention, it was a great opportunity to present them with signed copies.  I promise that soon I will post some pictures, because you won't want to miss Bruce Taylor all fancied up in his white suit and top hat for the event, with his gold-colored nametag reading "Mr Magic Realism"!  And if you haven't checked out Bruce's book yet, it's a great read-by-the-fire (or heater) for this winter, with the novel Kafka's Uncle, a novella about Marilyn Monroe and the aliens, and a whole group of short stories.  Something for everyone.

For those of you living in the Pacific Northwest, Bruce will be doing readings and signings around the area as well.  We just attended one at Balderdash Books in the Greenwood district of Seattle (a bookstore where the owner brings her dog, what else can you want?), and more are planned--we'll make sure to post dates and times here and on the Mondo Bizarro website for anyone who can walk, drive, take a bus, hang-glide, or use any other typical or obscure manner of transport.

Coming up soon will be our next book, It Came from Below the Belt by Bradley Sands.  We're in the final proofing, and cover formatting, and have some reviewers out there taking a first peek at it.  Speaking of the cover, I can't wait for you to see it!  As soon as I get the title on it, we'll post it for you to look at.  Shouldn't be too much longer now.

Besides the other projects for 2006 (Ray Fracalossy's Vinegar Wasteland, Deity by Vic Mudd, and Gina Ranalli's The Hanging Gardens of Babylon), we just signed Vincent W. Sakowski for his latest novel, Not Quite One of the Boys.  Vincent is a writer from Canada who you may already know as the author of Some Things are Better Left Unplugged from Eraserhead Press.

Well...guess that is the news at the moment...must sign off before I catch those brain parasites...oops, I think I did!  (No, guess it is just a sinus infection...rats...but I can keep hoping).

w00t [Sep. 20th, 2005|11:26 pm]
[mood | sleepy]

It's time for another fun-filled update, kids. Get ready to feel the love!

We've recently added a new member to the Afterbirth family, and that is none other than Tacoma writer, artist and musician Vic Mudd! We're very happy to have Vic join the wild ride that is our little press and you can plan to see his whacked-out bizarro novel DEITY (The Almighty's Adventures on Earth and Beyond) sometime this coming winter. Trust me, it's good one and Vic definitely fits right in with the rest of our literary misfits.

On a sadder note, Andre Duza decided to back out of his contract with us during preliminary discussions about the title of his novel. This was somewhat confusing to us, as Andre himself had said he was dissatisfied with the title, but in any case, we wish him all the best. God knows you can't go wrong with a zombie novel!

And as an aside, I advise each and every one of you to check out the latest issue of Bust Down the Door and Eat All the Chickens here: http://www.absurdistjournal.com/ and I'm not just saying that because a bunch of our own kids have stories featured within the pages. All the stories kick ass and...I have two words for you guys: resale value. These puppies are gonna go for a pretty penny one day on eBay. Seriously. You heard it here first.

And that's it for this edition of As the Afterbirth Turns. Now get the hell out of here!

Know Knews [Jul. 12th, 2005|07:56 pm]
[mood | accomplished]

is good news!

It's finally time for a long over-due update. First things first: we have been seriously freaking SWAMPED with manuscripts!!! It is becoming more and more difficult to keep up with all the submissions and queries and get back to everyone in a timely fashion, so if you've sent us something in the last month or so and haven't heard back from us yet, please be patient. We WILL get to you, it's just taking us a little longer than it did only a few short months ago. Sorry about that.

Of course, this is all a GOOD thing! We've got things stretching out well into 2006 now--something we couldn't have imagined not long ago. It's nice to know there are so many folks out there writing such cool BIZARRO stuff and we have a lot of great things happening right now as a result of all this madness. A bunch of cool writers and artists on the horizon, most recently the infamously talented Ray Fracalossy and his fantasticly strange and funny Tales from the Vinegar Wasteland. We're really excited about this book and the entire world should be too. As many of you already know, reading Ray is a real treat and his novel kicks some mondo bizarro ass!

But, sadly, there is a small bit of not so good news to report along with the good (yin-yang, baby!):

We seriously SERIOUSLY cannot accept any more collection submissions. We know you guys are great at writing short stories but we really need to concentrate on novels for a while. So, be original! Write a novel! Send it to us! Woo us with kindness and compliments--you never know what it may get you!

AND...I'm shutting up now. Thanks for your time. Drive thru please.

[music |Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today]

Ok, as I'm sure most of you know, our second release Tangerinephant by Kevin Dole 2 is now available. The book recieved an honorable mention in Eraserhead's first 'first novel' competition a couple years ago, which should tell you how mondo bizarro and fun it really is. Check it out; you won't be disappointed.

In other news, we been having a tough time finding a reliable artist to do the cover to Bruce Taylor's upcoming Kafka's Uncle, BUT I'm happy to report that angel of mercy Adrian Majkrzak has stepped in to rescue us. He did the Tangerinephant cover, so we know we can count on him and he'll do a great job. So, be on the lookout for that.

And lastly, our fifth release, due out this fall, will be It Came from Below the Belt, by Bust Down the Door and Eat All the Chickens editor Bradley Sands. This is seriously the strangest, funniest book I've read in a long time and we're happy and excited to have Bradley on board.

I think that's all I have to report for the moment. So, get outside and enjoy the sunshine!

Book release party! [Mar. 21st, 2005|08:01 pm]
[mood | calm]
[music |Lacuna Coil - Comalies]

Well, here we are back in Seattle after spending Saturday night down in Portland for the release of Carlton Mellick III's latest book, The Menstruating Mall and Jeremy Robert Johnson's Eraserhead novel, Angel Dust Apocalypse. Jeremy and his girlfriend Jessica hosted the party and I think it's fair to say a good time was had by all. A ton of cool people showed up and we made some great connections and had a great time. There was book buying, beer drinking and sitcom-theme-song singing and if there is a better way to spend a Saturday night, I sure as hell don't know what it is!

The Afterbirth Bunch [Mar. 17th, 2005|08:38 am]
[mood | cheerful]
[music |The Germs--MIA]

Time for another update! Woohaaaa!
First off, let me thank everyone who has submitted something to us in the last couple of months. I think it's fair to say we are being swamped with manuscripts and that rocks harder than a horns-to-the-sky metalhead. There is definitely no shortage of twisted writers out there and that is good news for everyone! Keep 'em coming!
However, I also must mention that we need more NOVELS! Feel free to continue submitting your short story collections but also know that we are getting pretty full-up on them--we already have enough for the rest of the year!--so you may have a better chance of acceptance by submitting a novel-length work, at least for the time being.
And where are the women writers??? Get your pen on, girls--don't let the boys have ALL the fun!!
And, lastly, here is a name we love to say around here: John Edward Lawson!!! We're thrilled to announce that we'll be releasing a book by John called Pocket Full of Loose Razorblades. He is a perfect, fun addition to the Afterbirth bunch and you'll be able to see the cover art and read the synopsis of this mind-bending collection soon. Keep an eye out!
So, I think that's all for now. Happy Saint Pats Day, guys. May it be green and gooey! <33333

Hunter S. Thompson [Feb. 21st, 2005|06:46 pm]
[mood | sad]
[music |The Cure - Disintergration]

Yeah, so Hunter killed himself today and I can't stop thinking about it. Fear and Loathing has been one of my favorite books for a long time. I still remember reading it for the first time one summer out on a leafy green deck when I was a teenager. It blew me away then and I suspect it always will.
This is such a huge, huge loss. I can only hope that he's at peace now and that his demons are finally silenced.
I lit a candle for him when I first heard and its still burning now. What a sad day...

Here we go.... [Feb. 7th, 2005|01:13 pm]
[mood | weird]

Hey kids!

Here we are, in the land of the living at last. Not sure how we feel about it yet. It seems noisy and too bright but I'm sure we'll adjust.
As you certainly have noticed, we have a snazzy new site, courtesy of the amazingly talented and twisted Alyssa Sturgill. (Buy her book Spider Pie, from Raw Dog Screaming Press, unless you wish a pox upon your house!)We may even update the thing once in a while...
Pretty soon, Carlton Mellick III's book The Menstruating Mall will be available to order. We're very excited and hope everyone checks it out asap. It's cooler than mohawked zombies doing a line dance!
So be prepared for the big afterbirth bomb, soon to be crashing into a head near you.
Watch the skies....
